Chapter Eleven

Archie

“You get a name tonight.” I hugged my turtle close. “Daddy’s going to help us pick one.”

I loved the taste of that on my tongue. Daddy. Soren was going to be my daddy. Not forever or anything wild and over the top like that. But for tonight he would be.

Not that I was putting the possibility of him being my daddy for more than a day in a box of not going to happen. I wanted it to, very much. But also, it wasn’t the wisest of ideas for me to get my hopes up too much. A couple of dates and a solid fucking weren’t enough to base a future on. Especially when they all happened within a twenty-four-hour period.

I set my turtle on the bed next to the outfit I picked out, including my favorite diaper. A small tote of toys sat beside the bed. I didn’t want to take over the playdate, but having everything out took away from me having to answer questions of where I kept things while I allowed myself to slip into little space.

Once I felt good about the bedroom, I wandered into the kitchen to get everything out there. I left the cookie sheet on the stovetop, my sippy, bottle, divided dishes, bibs, etc. on the counter, and made sure all of the foods he might need from the refrigerator and freezer were front and center. A few minutes before he was to arrive, I grabbed my fishy crackers and mac and cheese from the pantry and put them beside the dishes, just in case.

I was one of those adults who never gave up my fishy crackers. I brought them to work and never once worried that anyone would see them and assume I was little in my spare time. They had a unique taste, and the shape added to the texture I loved.

But daddies tended to think of them as little and, for that reason, I put them out. I added that to my mental list of things to discuss with Soren when he arrived. It was so freeing having someone who not only listened but actively wanted me to share my questions and thoughts with him. He didn’t even get flustered if I brought things up again because in my head, they were in a new context and therefore needed a whole new conversation.

He knocked on the door five minutes early. I half wondered if he had just been waiting for the time to park and come up to my door. And so, when I opened it, I asked him. “What time did you get here?”

“About ten minutes ago.”

I couldn’t help the smile forming on my face, knowing that his desire to be with me had him arriving early. Or maybe he was a fifteen-minutes-early-is-late kinda guy. I was going for the first.

“I don’t mind if you come early.” I threw my arms around him with abandon. “I’m glad you’re here.”

A little yelp came from behind me.

“Someone else is, too.
